Some of us like sweeping up and some of us don’t right?
When I was in Brazil I was always fascinated at the advanced martial artists that would take the heavy duty brooms to sweep the concrete floor car park prior to our Capoeira class kicking off.
In full gear with decades of experience behind them and broom in hand. Amazing.
Kinda made you wanna join the sweeping before the class started.
Check this cool take on ‘sweeping’ from Ryan Holiday:
“My friend the philosopher and martial artist Daniele Bolelli once gave me a helpful metaphor. He explained that training was like sweeping the floor. Just because we’ve done it once, doesn’t mean the floor is clean forever. Every day the dust comes back. Every day we must sweep. ...
…Every day for the rest of your life you will find yourself at one of three phases: aspiration, success, failure. You will battle the ego in each of them. You will make mistakes in each of them. You must sweep the floor every minute of every day. And then sweep again.”
Bottom line. Don't simply watch another 'martial artist'. Grab that broom! There’s work to be done (regardless of the phase you are in right now)!
