I’ve had many a good conversation with a close friend as he was wrapping up a PHD. The conversations (linked to his research) were about the impact of narrowing versus broadening thinking possibilities and the associated actions that come with that.
This line of thinking comes from Professor Frederickson.
Essentially, to broaden and build your thinking enables you to increase your thought – action repertoires. In other words, to see more possibilities and know they are within reach to act upon enables a greater chance of going for it.
